From the Director - December 2015

Let me tell you a little story about myself and why I'm here...

When I was in second grade in Santa Barbara, CA, our school garden coordinator taught us about camouflaged insects. We inspected the school garden, searching for bugs that blended in with their environment. That night I took a mini marshmallow, squished it into the shape of a flower, dyed it pink with food coloring and wrapped wire around it to create 6 tiny legs. The next day we hid our insect creations around the garden and hunted for each others with excitement. I don’t remember if anyone found my insect, crouched on the branch of a pink flowering bush, but I remember finding many other strange and whimsical bugs scattered throughout the foliage.

After all these years, this activity remains the most vivid memory from my elementary school garden - a pink gem, peeking out from the obscuring branches of time. My school garden taught me skills of observation, the taste of a carrot pulled straight from the earth and the fascinating curiousness of the natural world. I know those experiences helped shape my eating habits and connection with the outdoors from an early age.

I am blessed to now be directing a school and community garden organization here in Durango, where we provide similar experiences to children and families today. Not everyone has the time or space to have a garden at home. We’re developing school and community garden programs that provide access to growing space and teach folks from all walks of life how to grow their own food.

Our long term vision is to see a garden in every school, and in every neighborhood of La Plata County, so that all people can connect to their food, their land and each other in order to lead healthier, happier lives.

If you believe in what we are doing, I would kindly ask you to consider making a donation this year. We have big plans for 2016 and beyond, which will only be possible with YOUR support.

So that all kids (and those young at heart) may have a sense of wonder in the garden, please donate. Thank you so much - and here’s wishing you and your family a HEALTHY HOLIDAY season!

With gratitude,
