Summer has hit and we are heading toward the third week of the Manna Market next Wednesday. The Manna Market provides free produce to food insecure families in Durango. In the first week we had 50 Manna Market customers and distributed over 200 lbs of fresh produce!
In the second week of the Manna Market we included plants in the line up of fresh vegetables. Manna community members were so excited to take home plants to grow in their own gardens or in pots. One member of the Manna community said, "It makes me feel better about living on the mountain (homeless camp) if I can grow some tomato plants in a few pots and plant a garden". Twin Buttes generously donated their extra tomatoes and pepper plants to plant at Manna and distribute to community members and other network gardens.
We are expecting the bounty to grow throughout the summer. With 100% of the Manna Garden produce going to the Manna Kitchen we are relying heavily on local farmers and gardeners. If gardeners or farmers have extra produce please drop it off on Wednesdays from 1 to 3:30 pm or email Brooke@thegardenprojectswcolorado.org.
The Manna Kitchen has been utilizing the Manna Garden produce mostly in their fresh daily salads. Here is Thomas, Manna's Kitchen Manager with last week's lettuce batch
