We had a very productive workday this month!
Jake Walsh from JT Builders, joined us to help finish the benches, including some with backs! Great for resting after working hard in the garden!
We also planted Hops!
We planted the rhyzomes (roots) from hop plants that Garden Project Board Member, Becky Turner, is growing in her yard. The roots spread laterally so to dig them up with just dug into the ground about an inch and pulled up large sections. To plant them we put the cut rhyzomes horizontally in the ground and covered with soil and compost. Because we planted them late in the season they will not be producing this year but just getting established. Next year we hope to have a cascading wave of green hop vines on the fence!
We also planted Junipers outside of the fence where we had some erosion last year.
One member, Marye did some much needed weeding around our Food Forest Guild...the weeds were so tall they were blocking the sprinkler heads! She just dropped the weeds where she cut them so they will act as a green manure, breaking down in place.
The next workday will be Saturday, September 13th from 9am-11am.
